THE MANDAVELI TIMES: The morning glory

THE MANDAVELI TIMES: The morning glory

THE HILLS AND THE HEAT

I remember waking up to the soft sweet chirping of bulbuls, sparrows mynahs and quails. The hushing sound of the huge eucalyptus and pine trees, one could also hear the whoosh of the small mountain stream running down the tea bushes. Green meadows and astounding colors of daffodils ,roses and pansies were food to the soul.Inhaling the pollution free mountain fresh air gave us so much of energy ,not the type of energy we get today after downing vitamin tablets it was pure energy from natures oxygen. It was a more non-violent world there was harmony and rhythm between humans and the nature. There wasn't any mobile phones, ipods ,or laptops even the telephones were a bit rare. There were no refrigerators or fans.We didn't need air conditioners, fans or refrigerators there. The population was small and most of us in the town knew each other.
This place called Coonoor nests among the Nilgiri hills where the western and eastern ghats meet. What is said of it above is about thirty five years ago.My recent visit there was utterly disappointing. Though meeting old buddies and seeing my old school was good. The way how urbanization and pollution had ruined that wonderful town was simply mind boggling. The typical commercialism and violence of the modern society had not spared that place too. Everything was dear and people spoke without looking in the eye. If we strive we can stop this so called rapid urbanization. In the name of urbanization we keep razing down trees bulldoze hills construct mufti-storied buildings flatten almost anything just to compete and stay ahead of others. We hear news of animals intruding into villages and towns because we have destroyed their habitat. We have lost touch with nature and she is turning violent with newly named deluges like tsunami! there is no harmony with nature, only discord.I think the future generations will go to the zoos to see trees and plants like how we go to see wild animals today.
We are the world we are the children.I am no great robed bearded guru or political big head or business magnate I am a common man and this designation is enough to think to save the earth in whatever small way we can, plant trees or call up the blue cross to pick up an abandoned kitten.,,, in spite of our life down the fast lanes. I mean any tiny act which can help in the huge transformation and betterment of the earth we live. Give space and not destroy the habitat of animals, value and love this green earth else we will turn it red earth.

The morning glory

I am just back from a walk of about 5kms. Watching the sunrise on the horizon at the sea was really intriguing, an expereince far richer than any. Though its summer there were quite a number of clouds out there dark and neatly formed some of them were flat at the bottom and had various shapes on the upper, they all had a mixture of brown, white, gray and black..This place near mandaveli in chennai is called foreshore estate. The furious heat of the sun would start in a couple of hours melting the tar roads and spurting the dangerous uv rays. The sun was a crimson golden color the water in the sea shimmered, the waves were a pure white as they hit the shore. About ten ships of various sizes were anchored about 2 to 3 kms away. One of them was quite huge and brown in color probably carrying some sort of an oil. to the continent.

Inhaling the fresh air was rejuvenating though with a little aroma of fish and sea water. Walking back the road I came, the hustle and bustle of modern day was already there ...the huge college buses honking with students , a loudspeaker near the mandaveli signal chanting of some slokas, dust and mud settled on the leaves of the few leftover roadside trees.
